What to Expect

Owner, Installer - Doug Farmer

Born and raised in Austin, TX where I earned the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Marketing. Now I live in Houston with my wife and 3 kids.

During the 2008 Crash I was living in San Francisco. As people moved out of the city I would pick up their old furniture off the street, refinish it or reupholster it, and flip it as a side hustle.

In 2017 I started my own business, Sovereign Carpentry. I specialized in very old reclaimed wood, turning it into heirloom quality furniture for clients as well as installing barn beam mantles, barn siding walls, and custom sliding barn doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the process?

Let's chat! We can email back and forth or schedule a time to meet at Old World Lumber where I source my materials to go over options and designs. Then I'll email you over a PayPal invoice for the deposit (50%). The remainder will be due once the table is delivered.

Q: What's your Lead Time?

          Typically 10 - 12 weeks

Q: Do you make bathroom vanities?

Yes, I can make either standard floor to counter height vanities or floating vanities. In most cases I install the vanity and leave the countertop installation to whichever installer you choose. Sometimes this involves installing the vanity box/carcass in one trip, allowing the countertop installers to add the countertop, sink and pluming pipes, then returning to build any custom drawer boxes around the piping if necessary to maximize storage space. All of this would be covered in the design process.

Q: What finish do you use and can you get a flat/matte finish?

Yes, I recommend a matte finish on most reclaimed wood tables. I typically use a high quality, water-based poly-acrylic with no VOCs. I start with 2 - 4 coats of gloss for the best durability, then finish with a final coat of matte. The other product I often use is a very high quality hard-wax oil from Rubio Monocoat originally designed for flooring (very durable).

Q: What do you make that would match the cabinets?

All kinds of things! Using the same wood I've made custom shelves, mantels, vanities, and buffets. If you're wanting to coordinate with a cabinet, let me know and I'd be happy to send you some designs to look over.

"This mantel was a rack column in a Jim Beam aging warehouse, they closed this warehouse and built metal buildings because another one just like this wooden one was stuck by lightning and they lost 1% of their global supply!"

"This mantel was part of a horse barn in the New England area that was built over 100 years ago!"

I really enjoy working with materials that have such amazing heritage and stories behind them.

Barn Beam Consoles

"This barn beam came out of a horse barn in the New England area and it's over 100 years old!"

Stories like this are what I really enjoy about crafting high quality furniture from reclaimed wood. I also do a lot of work behind the scenes to leave all of the original character of the beam while making it smooth to the touch and using different joinery methods to keep in line with the age of the wood itself like large dovetail joints.

Stories like this are what I really enjoy about crafting high quality furniture from reclaimed wood. Besides this Jim Beam Whiskey Wood I've also made doors out of wood from a farmhouse in the Austrian Empire and 100 year old barn siding from the New England area.
